Tomorrow is a Big Day

August 31st, 2010

New school year starts tomorrow! HL and Sabrina will be in Lee & Kevin’s class together this year.

Kevin says:

Our curriculum will be wide ranging but with a focus on colors, numbers, emotions, and animals. Our main goal is teaching social interaction and self-help skills, such as potty training and cleaning up after one’s self. We try to encourage in each individual child the things they seem to have an aptitude for, whether that be reading books or making friends. For our first week we will focus on family and meeting new people. This will help everyone with the big transition, teachers included. Please bring in some photos of you and your children as well as other family members that you wouldn’t mind being used in a future project here at school.

From HL’s teachers:

Hi Everyone,

We hope you all had a great Memorial weekend! The kids are easing back into things, I think we are all wishing the rain would stop soon! We have been enjoying our time indoors working with our new classroom tool bench.

Next week we will talk about bubbles. We will play with bubbly water in our sensory bins, make some prints with bubble wrap, mix up our own bubble solution and play with it outside, and play with the giant bubble maker!

We will also be spending some time getting ready for our Kabbalat Shabbat performance. Each 2’s class will be performing a short song on Friday, June 11th followed by a Shabbat celebration with the pre-school classes. Please come and watch us, Kabbalat Shabbat is from 8:30 until 9:15 in the ballroom. If your child doesn’t normally come on Friday, but you would like them to be part of our performance, you are welcome to bring them along to participate, provided someone stays to take them home when we are finished. Please let us know if this is your plan.

Congratulations to Sam and his family on their new baby girl, Augusta, who was born last Friday! We got to meet her this morning, Sam is a very proud big brother!

As you form your summer plans, please let us know if you plan to change your child’s schedule so we can plan accordingly. If you decide to take some time off during the summer months, it will not affect your child’s placement for the fall.

We are still on the lookout for Naomi’s ladybug boots! If you have seen them around, please let us know. Also, please remember to label items which go into our fridge, especially loose cups. When things are loose in the fridge door, it can get difficult to remember whose is whose. Thanks!

As always, please let us know if you have any questions!
Thanks,
Jessica and Mya

From HL’s teachers:

Hello everyone!

Next week we are going to study weather! We will look at different kinds of storms like tornadoes and thunderstorms. We will look at pictures of different types of clouds. We will be having a short week because we are closed on Monday May 31st to observe Memorial Day.

Please remember to let us know if you are changing your schedule for the summer. We need to know as soon as possible and Erika needs to know in writing as well if things are changing for you.
Please remember to keep your child’s cubby stocked with underwear, extra clothing and diapers/pullups. We have had a shortage recently in many cubbies!

Naomi from our classroom is missing her rainboots- they are red and look like ladybugs. If you have mistakenly taken them home, please bring them back and we will make sure to get them back to her!

Thanks and have a great weekend!
Mya and Jessica

Who would take Naomi’s rainboots?!

HATS!!!

Hi Everyone!

We have been enjoying the sunny weather this week! The kids have been really excited to play outside now that the sun is out, and we have been looking at plants and learning about seeds. We planted some peas in our window greenhouses, and hopefully soon we can put them outside.

For the short week next week we will have fun with hats! The kids will try on lots of hats, make their own hats and play “pin the hat on the kid” (don’t worry, its a paper kid!) We will also read “Caps for Sale” and other hat books. Please feel free to bring in any hats you have at home for us to try on!

Quick reminder that we are closed next Wednesday and Thursday for Shavuot. We will also be closed Monday May 31st for Memorial Day. We have a Kabbalat Shabbat tomorrow morning in the ballroom from 8:30 to 9:15.

It is birthday time! Lots of kids have birthdays coming up in the next few weeks and we love to celebrate in the classroom. If you would like to bring in a birthday treat for your child’s birthday, please feel free! The most convenient time is during afternoon snack, typically around 4:00. Just give us a heads up that you are coming in.

The sunny weather also means its time to start thinking about sunscreen again. We put it on all the kids on the sunny days, but it is helpful for us to know who has gotten some at home already so we don’t repeat. Also let us know if you prefer to use your own sunscreen or our school supply.

We also want to thank everyone for the amazing teacher appreciation week! All of the gifts were great, we feel very loved. Thank you!

Have a great weekend!
Jessica and Mya

From HL’s teachers:

Hello Everyone,

This has been an eventful week, celebrating Cinco De Mayo and learning about Mexico! We made a piñata, which we will break open tomorrow! We also made churros, which are a form of Mexican snack similar to a doughnut. They were delicious!

Next week we will learn about how seeds grow. We will plant our very own starter peas and then replant them when they get bigger. We will talk about what things help seeds to grow such as sunshine, rain and soil. We will also build a plant portrait together to see each part of a plant as it grows.

As usual, please keep updating your child’s cubby- bring things home that aren’t needed in the cubby anymore such as soiled clothing, artwork, heavy winter clothes. Bring in plenty of fresh clothing including socks and pull-ups/ diapers. It is very helpful to us if you bring in pull-ups that open on the sides, as it saves us from taking the child’s clothing off during each time at the potty.

Reminder: We are closed May 19th and 20th as well as Memorial Day on May 31st.

Have a great weekend!

Mya and Jessica

From HL’s Teachers:

Hello,

We love space week! The kids are loving talking about the planets and where we live and what it would be like to be an astronaut. It has been an eventful birthday week as well. Sam turned three yesterday, it is teacher Mya’s birthday today, and Henry became a big brother at the beginning of the week. Congratulations and happy birthday to everyone!

Next week is Cinco de Mayo, and so we will be learning about Mexico. We will make a piñata, learn some Spanish words, and cook churros and guacamole. We will also look at Mexico on the globe and talk about its oceans, cities and mountains.

We are still moving along well with potty training. If you are sending pull ups to school please try to get the kind that open on the side. These save us a lot of time as we don’t have to take shoes and pants off at every diaper check. Thanks!

Tomorrow we will join the pre-school in the ballroom for Kabbalat Shabbat. It goes from 8:30-9:15 and families are welcome to come as well!

We are closed Wednesday May 19th and Thursday May 20th for Shavuot. We will also be closed Monday May 31st for Memorial Day.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

From HL’s teachers:

Hello everyone,

We had a great week this week with Dinosaurs- we had an archeological dig, made dino footprints and looked at them through a microscope! The kids loved reading books about dinosaurs and playing with them.

Next week we will talk about space! The sun, the earth, stars and other planets! We will make a spaceship and get everyone to make a picture of themselves to put in it!

Continue to restock cubbies with diapers, pull-ups, clothing etc. Please include socks in that stock because a lot of times they get wet too when accidents occur. Thanks so much and have a great weekend!
