HALLELUJAH!

February 26th, 2010

HL has a new favorite show! Move over, Diego! You got brushed aside for the PBS series THE DINOSAUR TRAIN and it might make me a terrible person, but I couldn’t be more pleased. DINOSAUR TRAIN is about nine billion times less annoying and–and!–watching HL stomp around and sing the “I’M A T. REX!” song is pure bliss. I really need to video that for you.

I’m sure we’re not done with Diego, but I’ve got to say I’m grateful for the respite.

Anyway.

We’re off to the Purim parade at school. Love you all.

I put up 50+ more photos from our photoshoot with Ed Peterson this weekend. I need to finish going through and adding titles and details and whatnot, but I couldn’t wait to post the link here. I’m so happy with them!

(If anybody wants prints, let me know which shots and I’ll make it happen.)

BabyCenter Update

February 24th, 2010

This week’s BabyCenter Update for HL:

Your 2-year-old now

What can a 2-year-old remember? More and more every day! He’s developing a way of thinking called spatial representation or symbolic thinking. Basically it means he can see things in his mind’s eye. As experience and habit create new connections in his brain, he becomes better able to call up these captured images: what a lost teddy looks like, the way to Grandma’s house, the ice cream and cake served at the party yesterday.

Help your preschooler lay down these memory tracks in the brain by asking questions about things he knows: “Hmmm, what will the bunny say goodnight to next?” Ask him to recall details: “Did you have vanilla ice cream or chocolate?” At night, review your day together: “And then what did we do?”

At School, Week of 3-1-10

February 24th, 2010

From HL’s teachers:

Hi Everyone,

This week has been all about Purim. We have made our groggers, learned some Purim songs, and heard the Purim story. This coming Friday we will attend the parade and carnival. The parade will start at 9:30; we will all parade up through the school into the bubble for the carnival. There will be lots of fun and games set up in the bubble for us to do. Parents are welcome to join for any or all of our celebration. The kids are encouraged to come in costumes, but it is by no means required. If you would like to send the costume to school we are more than happy to change the kids when it is time.

Next week we will talk about night time. We will make a night time scene for our bulletin board, talk about nocturnal animals, read “bedtime” stories and on Friday we will have a pajama day! We have been talking a bit about having a PJ day and the kids seem really excited. We will spend the day hanging out in our pajamas, cook some breakfast food to eat with lunch and watch a short movie after nap time. Feel free to send your child with pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or anything else pajama related they want to bring in. Also, we will serve the kids “breakfast for lunch”, so you may want to pack a smaller lunch than usual.

The Preschool Parent Committee will be starting a “Penny Drive” to raise money for the playground. We will decorate a coffee can and place it in the classroom where parents and kids can donate pennies or spare change. We are looking for parent volunteers to count and wrap the money every 2 weeks (we will provide wrappers). If you are interested, please let us know! Money will be collected until the end of May, and will go towards new equipment for our playground. Keep an eye out for our coffee can, coming soon!

Have a great rest of the week!

In this one, Henry’s talking about the baby in *his* belly–whose name, incidentally, has changed from “Doug” to “Oscar.” No word yet as to Oscar’s due date.

HL has started making up words and names. Last night he started substituting made-up words in a familiar song.

At School, Week of 2-22-10

February 18th, 2010

From HL’s teachers:

Hello All,

Hope you are enjoying the lovely weather this week! We certainly have been taking advantage of it and spending a lot of time outside playing!

This week we made Chinook salmon, looked at the state of Oregon and learned a little bit about where we live. We have also been learning about Purim with Morah Devorah and Morah Kim. We have heard stories and sung songs about this holiday.

Next week we will focus on Purim. Some of our projects will include making groggers, crowns and Purim baskets, tasting Hamantaschen, and practicing our Purim songs. We will join the preschoolers for a Purim parade and carnival next Friday February 26th. We will let you know more about the carnival as it comes closer.

Keep refilling your child’s cubby with diapers, pull-ups and extra clothing! Thanks so much, and as usual let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
